Top Reasons Why Early Water Leak Detection Is Essential In Winter

Top Reasons Why Early Water Leak Detection Is Essential In Winter

Freezing and fluctuating low temperatures make leaks more likely to occur than other months. While detecting water leaks early on is always important, it is absolutely essential in winter – for a number of reasons.

  1. Water Can Freeze

In the winter, the cold temperatures can cause water to freeze. Once it freezes, it expands, causing your pipes to burst or crack. Burst pipes are never a fun thing for homeowners to deal with. It means leaks, possible structural damage, and a compromised plumbing system. One way to avoid this from happening to you this winter is to insulate your pipes.

  1. Damage Can Occur

If leaks aren’t detected early on, damage to your home can occur. Sometimes, leaks are hidden behind walls or under the floors and homeowners don’t notice them until they see damage. These types of leaks are the most dangerous, as they can cause you to have to replace damaged drywall or flooring – and it’s expensive. Not only can damage occur inside, but it can also occur outside. A leak that happens around your home can end up causing damage to your foundation. Since leaks aren’t always noticeable at first, there are some signs that may indicate you have a hidden leak:

  1.     Skyrocketing water bills
  2.     The sound of running water even if your faucets and toilets aren’t running
  3.     Wet or damp flooring
  4.     Foul odors, such as mildew
  5.     Wall cracks or other visible damage to your foundation
  6.     Damp or moldy drywall
  7.     You don’t have running water

  1. Save You Money

Unless you have increased activity in your home one month, such as hosting out-of-town guests or a party, your water bills are likely to be close to the same price every month. If you notice an unexplained jump in your water bill suddenly, then it could indicate you have a leak. Not only can early water leak detection save you money, but it can also give you the opportunity to catch problems early before they get much bigger – and costlier. According to the EPA, fixing water leaks can save homeowners about 10% on their water bills.

  1. Water Safety

Did you know a water leak can actually compromise the safety of your water? If you have a leaking water pipe, there’s a chance that your water supply can become contaminated. Damaged water pipes can change the water pressure which can cause that pipe to get its water externally. While we don’t know where that external water is coming from necessarily, we do know that it is most likely not safe to consume. To avoid causing harm to you and your family’s health, make sure you invest in early water leak detection.

Top 5 Freakishly Easy Halloween Lighting Tips and Tricks For Your Home

Are you ready to get a little spooky this Halloween? One way you can make your home more appealing to your neighborhood is to add some lighting. Adding lighting, however, doesn’t have to be tricky. Here are the top 5 easy Halloween lighting tips and tricks for your home.

  1. Light Your Pathways

When decorating for Halloween, keep safety top of mind. Not only can additional yard lighting draw more trick or treaters to your home, but it can also create a safer environment for those that do. Avoid unneccessary slips and falls with some landscape lighting!

  1. Make Your Outdoor Lighting Look “Haunted”

One easy way to spruce up your yard is to make your existing lighting look haunted. Homeowners can achieve this by placing whipsy fabric over your connecting lights outside to give them an eery appearance. To prevent a fire, however, make sure you don’t place the fabric directly onto a lightbulb.

  1. Security Lighting

Halloween brings out all the candy and cute costumes, but it can also bring out some late-night mischief. That being said, security lighting is a great option to deter such shenanigans. Not only is security lighting beneficial to have for a holiday like Halloween, but it is also good to have in general. Have your local electrician install some motion sensor lighting for you today.

  1. Alternative Lighting Options

Candles inside pumpkins is popular for outdoor decoration – and for obvious reasons. The natural flickering of the flame offers a spooky effect. However, any time there is an open flame, there is risk of fire. To avoid a fire hazard, try using electronic candles and flickering lights. These can provide the same effect as a candle without the fire risk.

  1. Use Black Lights

Kids love the creepy effect of black lights this time of year. If you’re looking to make your home decorations a little spookier this Halloween, consider using black lights. They are easy to install and you can even switch out your existing lights for that black light effect – temporarily, of course. If you do this, however, we recommend you use LED bulbs as they tend to not overheat as quickly as standard, incandescent lightbulbs do.

[Infographic] 4 Creative Ways To Light Your Home

1. Bolden Up Your Living Room

The living room is the first thing you and your guests see upon entering your home. It’s important that your creative lighting in the living room is comfortable, well-functioning, and in this case, daring. Make a strong impression by using a bold center fixture for your living room. Not only does a bold fixture make a statement about you, it is also a better option than adding several smaller lights in your ceiling resulting in an overly lit room. To achieve this look, you can use a contemporary chandelier or a sturdy suspension lamp.

2. Create a Night Sky Effect for Your Children’s Bedroom

If you have a child, chances are they probably want a cool bedroom. You can achieve this simply by changing up the lighting in their room. String up some star-shaped fairy lights and light them up at night. For the safety of your children, make sure the lights you get are LED lights and made of plastic.

If string lights are not an option, consider a moon and star shaped ceiling fixture. This fixture will provide warm ambient lighting adding to the comfort and creativity of your child’s bedroom.

3. Consider Under Cabinet Lighting for Your Kitchen

If the rest of your home is well-lit and your kitchen still resembles a dim dungeon where you can’t see what you cook, consider some under cabinet lighting. Under cabinet lighting provides accent lighting for food preparation as well as some soft background lighting with a modern feel.

Here are some different types of under cabinet lights you can consider:

  • LED fixtures are more expensive, but they are the most energy-efficient option and are dimmable.
  • Xenon fixtures are dimmable and inexpensive, but they consume a lot of energy and emit a lot of heat.
  • Fluorescent fixtures don’t emit as much as heat as Xenon fixtures. However, their pricing is around the same as LED fixtures.

4. Add Softer Lighting for Your Bathroom

Replace the harsh lighting in your bathroom with softer lighting emitted by candle sconces. Candle sconces will give your bathroom calmer lighting which is nice to have when you’re taking a relaxing bath. In addition to that, these sconces will also be ideal for mirror lighting. If you want to use these candle sconces on a regular basis, go for battery-operated candles!

For ceiling lighting, choose lights that radiate diffused lighting that isn’t pointing directly down on your head.

How To Prepare Your Furnace For Fall: Top 5 Maintenance Tips

How To Prepare Your Furnace For Fall: Top 5 Maintenance Tips

Don’t fall behind with preparing your furnace for the season ahead! Here are the top 5 maintenance tips to get your furnace ready for fall.

  1. Change Your Filter

Furnace filters can easily become clogged with dust, dander, and other debris. That is why we recommend you change your filter every 1-3 months. If your furnace filter is clogged, your unit has to work harder to heat your home. Not only can this be uncomfortable when it doesn’t heat your home fast enough, but it can also increase your energy bills.

  1. Upgrade Your Thermostat

Fall is a great time to consider upgrading your thermostat! By upgrading to an energy efficient programmable thermostat, you can save energy and also keep your home comfortable at all times. Don’t you hate coming back from vacation in the middle of winter to a freezing cold home? Waiting for your place to heat up can feel never-ending. However, with a programmable thermostat, you can program the times you’ll be out of the home and run the heating accordingly. This can put less strain on your unit so it isn’t having to work as hard.

  1. Clean Vents and Registers

Not only should you remember to clean vents and registers, but you should also make sure you don’t have any furniture covering them. Once you make sure they are clear, you should go over them with a vacuum or dusting cloth. Over time, your vents and registers can collect dust and debris, eventually sending it into your HVAC system. This can negatively impact your indoor air quality.

  1. Seal Your Windows and Doors

Do you have any small drafts coming through your windows or doors? If so, then it’s possible you have a leak. According to the Department of Energy, you can lose between 25% and 30% of your warm air through a drafty window. The best way to ensure you’re not losing any heat and seeing larger-than-usual heating bills, consider sealing all visible holes.

  1. Schedule Your Furnace Maintenance

Last but certainly not least, schedule your maintenance. This is probably the most important fall tip. We recommend an annual maintenance to keep your furnace performing at its very best. During a tune-up, an expert technician will clean your unit and inspect it for any problems. This helps ensure your furnace is ready for the cold seasons ahead and fix any minor issues before they become major hassles.

Top Reasons Why Routine Electrical Preventative Maintenance Is So Important

Top Reasons Why Routine Electrical Preventative Maintenance Is So Important

Unless the electrical system is causing problems, many people tend to forget about it. Even if your electrical system isn’t experiencing issues, it’s still recommended you schedule preventative maintenance. Here are the top reasons why.

  1. Catching Problems Early and Preventing Future Problems

With a preventative maintenance, you’re able to catch issues early. Not only does this keep problems from getting worse, but it also keeps them from getting more expensive. Much like how you wouldn’t drive your car 10,000 miles without getting an oil change, you shouldn’t overwork your electrical system without a maintenance.

  1. Helping Ensure The Safety Of People In Your Home or Business

Your safety is important – and a malfunctioning electrical system can be a serious threat to that. Not only can it result in injury, but it can also cause an electrical fire. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), home electrical fires account for over 50,000 fires in the United States each year. When you schedule a maintenance, an electrician will thoroughly inspect your system for any signs of issues, faulty wiring, or anything that could be harmful or life threatening.

  1. Making Sure Your Electrical Equipment Is Up To Code

By scheduling a code inspection, you can ensure that you are keeping you and your loved ones safe. The National Electric Code (NEC) sets standards that all businesses and homes must maintain and adhere to. With new additions to these rules and changes over time, it’s easy to put your home or business at risk by ignoring the need for regular maintenance and inspection. Dangerous electrical issues can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Make sure your electrical equipment is up to code to keep you safe.

  1. Keeping Your Equipment Working At Maximum Efficiency

If you take care of your electrical system, your electrical system will take care of you. Research has shown that equipment that is regularly maintained is more efficient. To improve the efficiency of your electrical system, an electrical maintenance will certainly help. Less wear and tear on your equipment equals less wasted energy when it’s running. Not only that, but a more efficient system means less spent on electricity bills. An electrician can determine what problems you may be experiencing with energy consumption and provide solutions to save you money.

Top Reasons Why You Should Schedule A Professional Drain Cleaning

Top Reasons Why You Should Schedule A Professional Drain Cleaning

Do your drains need a little TLC? The best thing you can do for your drains is to ensure only the right items go down them. However, sometimes no matter how careful you are, you still end up with clogs and blockages. Before you run to the store to grab a bottle of drain cleaner, read this blog for the top reasons why you should schedule a professional drain cleaning instead.

  1. Safer For Your Drains

Professional drain cleaning refrains from using any harsh chemicals that can be hazardous to your drains. When used improperly, popular store-bought drain cleaners can lead to corrosion, leaks, and burst pipes. Not only that, but self-cleaning your drains isn’t as effective as hiring a professional.

  1. Effective Methods

More often than not, people think their drain clog is nothing but a simple fix. Sometimes, they’re right. But other times, there’s underlying issues that may actually cost you more money in the long run if not addressed properly. Drains are commonly clogged with hair and soap, which contrary to popular belief, store-bought drain cleaners actually cannot remove. In a sense, pouring store-bought drain cleaner down your drain is like slapping a Band-Aid on the problem. They work to temporarily restore function by clearing the bottom of the pipe. For a more effective method, you should look into hiring a professional drain cleaner to resolve your issue once and for all. It’ll not only save you money in the long run, but it’ll also save you time.

  1. Saves You Time and Money

Have you ever made several trips to the store for drain cleaner, worked for hours trying to remove the clogs in your pipes with no success? You not only may feel defeated, but you probably also feel like you wasted time – and money. That’s not something you have to worry about when you hire a professional. Not only will they resolve the issue for you effectively and efficiently, they’ll also eliminate the amount of mess a task like this creates while saving you time and money.

  1. Elimination of Clogs – And Other Problems

It may be pretty obvious, but a professional drain cleaning will eliminate your clogs – amongst other things. Not only that, but it will also eliminate foul odors and the risk of mold and bacteria growth. Often times, the source of the clogs and smells are deep inside the pipes that aren’t touchable without professional tools and assistance. If you want to eliminate your clogs and smells for good, schedule a professional drain cleaning appointment.

Top 5 Ways to Reduce Unhealthy Air Quality In Your Home This Summer

Top 5 Ways to Reduce Unhealthy Air Quality In Your Home This Summer

Did you know the air inside your home is more harmful than the air outside? According to the EPA, the levels of indoor air pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels. Sometimes those levels can exceed 100 times that of outdoor levels. Here are the top 5 ways you can reduce unhealthy air quality in your home this summer.

  1. Change Your AC Filters

Changing your AC filter regularly is one way to keep the air inside your home healthy. Replacing your filter at least every 1-3 months helps to prevent obstruction of airflow and damaging clogs. Air filters trap airborne contaminants, but if they get clogged, it can greatly reduce your indoor air quality and put a strain on your HVAC system.

  1. But Don’t Forget About Your Other Filters

Your air conditioner isn’t the only appliance with a filter. It’s also not the only thing working to keep your air clean. Be sure to also check the filters in your other household appliances, such as your vacuum, kitchen vents, and clothes dryer – just to name a few.

  1. Clean Your Air Ducts

Air duct cleaning has several benefits, including reducing allergens and irritants, removing unpleasant smells, improving airflow, and creating a cleaner, healthier living environment. Air duct cleaning can greatly improve your indoor air quality by reducing the number of airborne pollutants that circulate throughout your home.

  1. Keep Your Carpets Clean

Although carpet is cozy, it’s known for trapping bacteria, allergens, dust and other pollutants that greatly impact your indoor air quality. To reduce these pollutants while also improving your indoor air quality, you should consider vacuuming weekly with a high-quality vacuum, and deep clean your carpeting with a steam cleaner.

  1. Control The Humidity In Your Home

Your indoor humidity should be between 30-50%. Too much moisture in the air not only makes you hot and uncomfortably sweaty, but it also be damaging to your home – such as mold growth. To control and reduce the humidity in your home, you want to make sure your home is well-ventilated. Some ways to do that include using your air conditioner, using your ventilation fans when you’re cooking or showering, taking cooler showers during those hot summer months, fixing leaky pipes, opening a window to let fresh air in, and investing in a dehumidifier – just to name a few.

How To Choose The Best HVAC Repair Service?

hvac, hvac repair, hvac repair company, hvac repair service

How To Choose The Best HVAC Repair Service?

Are you a homeowner in need of HVAC repair? Finding a reliable HVAC contractor you can count on and trust can be both stressful and challenging. We recommend you choose an HVAC company for your home comfort needs before you have a heating or cooling emergency. There’s nothing worse than being left without cool air in the middle of summer – or heat in the middle of winter. By doing research ahead of time, you can rest assured knowing you have a trusted option when you need them most. Here are all the ways you can choose the best contractor for all your HVAC repair needs.

  1. Read Online Reviews

Reviews are one of the best ways you can find a reliable HVAC contractor. It’s important to know what the community thinks about this company and what their reputation looks like. Sites such as Google and Facebook are great for researching reviews. Even the best companies will have a few negative reviews. Make sure to read through several of them to decide if they’re a good fit for you or not.

  1. Do Research and Verify Credentials

Aside from researching reviews, you should also research the legitimacy of the business. You do not want to hire a contractor that isn’t licensed or insured. Not only that, but it’s also a good idea to see if the company has any awards or affiliations that are note-worthy. You could even take it a step further and contact the Better Business Bureau to check on the reputation of the company you have in mind.

  1. Seek Referrals From Friends and Family

Your friends and family care about you and wouldn’t recommend a company they thought would let you down. Ask your friends and family who have had a positive experience with a trusted HVAC company in your area. If they’re satisfied, they would be happy to share that with you. Some companies even have referral programs, so that’s always worth asking as well.

  1. Obtain Several Estimates

When you shop for a car or a house, chances are you want to test drive a few models and step foot in a few houses before making the decision to buy. The same is true for your HVAC unit. It’s quite the investment and a bad repair could not only be damaging to your unit, but it could also be damaging to your wallet. Get pricing from several contractors before making your decision. It’s important to remember, however, that cheaper isn’t always better. Sometimes, it’s worth paying a little bit more for quality service you can trust.

What Is A Central Air Conditioner Condenser Coil?

condenser coil, ac, ac unit, condenser, coil, air conditioning

What Is A Central Air Conditioner Condenser Coil?

All the HVAC lingo can get confusing. If you don’t know what a central air conditioner condenser coil is, you are not alone. We’re here to break it down so it’s easier to understand.

So, What Is It?

To put it simply, a central AC’s condenser coil is what collects the heat from your home’s warm air and releases it outside. The condenser coil doesn’t work alone. In fact, the evaporator and condenser coils both have to work together to cool your home. Without either of them, your AC unit wouldn’t function properly.  Teamwork really does make the dream work!

What does it do?

Much like your evaporator coil, your condenser coil is made of copper and is what holds the refrigerant in its liquid form. The heat that the refrigerant has absorbed releases into the air outside. Once this happens and once the heat energy has been released, the pressurized liquid refrigerant flows back to the condenser coil. To adequately cool your home, it’s a process and a lot of that process falls on the condenser coil. That being said, you want to make sure your condenser coil is always working as it should. If it’s not, then you may need to consider a repair or replacement.

When you should repair your AC condenser:

Like many major appliances you own, maintenance is essential to keep parts moving as they should. Sometimes, maintenance can be as simple as removing blockages and cleaning dirt and debris from around your unit. If you start to notice these signs, it may be time to repair your condenser:

  • Dirty Condenser: Before turning on your AC for the summer, you want to make sure things such as dirt or plants aren’t blocking your unit.
  • Bad Condenser Relay Switch: Luckily, a bad condenser relay switch usually just means you need to replace the part – which is typically an easy fix.
  • Bad Run Capacitor: If you have a bad run capacitor, you’ll most likely just have to swap out this faulty component for a new one.
  • Faulty Motor: You can risk damaging your unit even more if you let this go without addressing it right away. If you have a faulty motor, you’ll need to replace it.

When you should replace your AC condenser:

While you will most likely be able to replace your AC condenser without having to replace your entire unit, you will find that sometimes it is more cost-effective and efficient to just replace the entire unit.

  • Damaged Coil: Even though replacing damaged coil is possible without having to replace your entire unit, it does take a significant amount of time and labor, and is pretty expensive. You will want to consider just replacing your entire AC unit at this point.
  • Blockage: If you have a blockage, it’s a sign your condenser needs to be replaced. However, if this blockage has caused significant damage, you may be looking at replacing more than just the condenser.
  • Leaks: Unfortunately, you can’t replace seals and tubes of your condenser, so you’ll need to replace the entire condenser if you notice any leaks.
